If Not Now? – When?
I don’t know about you but before I started my weight loss journey I had several starts. I spent 10 years telling myself that this was the year that I was going to lose weight. I would research and find the company that had the most dynamic marketing and go for it. I tried them all. Jenny Craig, Nutrisystem, Weight Watchers, The Great American Diet, The Cabbage Soup Diet, you name it. All of those plans ended in the same manner. I lost some weight yet only to gain it all back with an added little extra pounds to go with it. As I approached 300 lbs. I was miserable. My body hurt in places it had never hurt before and I was afraid that my doctor would soon be diagnosing me with diabetes or cancer.
The worst part about being overweight for me were three things, Sleep Apnea, getting dressed and going to the gym. Having sleep apnea meant that anytime I sat still for more than 5 minutes and conditions were right I could fall asleep. I was tired all the time because I was not sleeping well at night. This made me a low energy person. I despised getting dressed because I could never find anything to wear. In the end I always chose the same colors or outfits, my favorite shade of black. I refused to buy new clothing, because to me that meant I was committed to being fat. Almost all of my button down tops were missing the buttons near the breast area. And I hated going to the gym. Just walking in the door was a big ordeal because I felt like all eyes were on me. Obviously my self-esteem was very low. Also I didn’t have a plan. I’d go to the gym and warm up on the treadmill and stare at the weights wondering where to start. It was easier to participate in a group fitness class.
The whole gym experience would last about 3 months, then I’d fizzle out again, and get back to the job of maintaining my weight and making promises to myself to get restarted on Monday. That went on for 10 years. Finally, after waking up with heart palpitations one night I decided that I wanted to live. I decided that I would change the conversation I was having with myself about myself.
If that pattern sounds like you even in the smallest way you must be feeling a little anxiety about the upcoming New Year. Here comes 2015 and you are still talking about that 20 pounds. Perhaps it’s 100 pounds or more. Now you’re thinking I really want to do something about it. When you get sick and tired of the hot tears, negative thoughts, Walmart jeans, hurting feet, prescription drugs, hiding your nudity from your husband, knee problems, binge eating, being ignored by society or being stared at when you walk into a room, perhaps then you may have just about have reached your breaking point.
