Freestyle Fitness New Trainer – Sherrie Gilbert
Although I grew up in a family filled with athletes, I have never been athletic myself. After joining the Army at age 17, fitness quickly became a part of my life. Being active has served me well by allowing me to pursue a career as a police officer for the past 18 years. I also work as a Mental Health Professional and an Adjunct Criminal Justice Professor. I enjoy my busy lifestyle.
My health took a turn in 2013 when my mother was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. Being an only child, I took on the role as her caregiver. As with most caregivers it became difficult to keep up with my own health. Food quickly became my way to escape the pain and stress of taking care of a terminally ill parent. After weighing nearly 200 lbs and being diagnosed with several medical conditions to include: high blood pressure, hyperthyroid disease, ulcers, sleep apnea, vitamin deficiency, and gastrointestinal issues, I was placed on numerous medications by my physician. The side effects from the medication were far worse than any illness that I had been diagnosed with. I decided that I no longer wanted to be on medication. My dad suggested I find a local Zumba class to participate in.
I started my fitness journey with Freestyle Fitness, LLC that same year. I instantly fell in love with Zumba. Where else could you meet wonderful people and be able to express your love for music and dance? I not only loved Zumba, but I loved the way it made me feel. It helped me destress. I lost about 15 lbs going to Zumba class, but my doctor stated that I needed to lose more in order to get off medication. In October 2014, I decided to join Freestyle Fitness boot camp. It was there, in bootcamp, that I not only learned about the importance of doing a variety of exercises, but also the important role that nutrition plays in your life. I lost over 25lbs in 3 boot camps and an additional 15lbs after. I am also happy to say that I no longer take any medications. Zumba and bootcamp both have helped me in so many ways. It motivates me to help others while sharing my love for Zumba. I am currently licensed in Zumba and Zumba in the Circuit. I plan to continue my fitness education and obtain my Group Fitness Certification and Zumba Toning license.
