I began studying dance as a young girl in New York with a concentration in ballet and tap. As a young woman I migrated to modern dance which led me to fitness in my early 20’s. Like most women after marriage and starting a family finding time for fitness became increasingly more difficult, as my family grew. I was fortunate to be able to home school 3 of my 4 children and run a marketing business from my home. All of this was great, but because spent a lot of time at home I became very sedentary.
I needed a lifestyle change. I began taking Zumba classes in 2009 after I tipped the scale at 289. It had become increasingly difficult to walk more than 5 minutes without stopping or leaning on something after standing for more than a few minutes. My feet hurt and I could no longer walk in heels without feeling like I would tip over.
Sleeping had become a chore as well. I had to sleep on as many as 5 pillows to keep my head elevated so I could breathe at night as I had developed sleep apnea. I could not bend down to tie my own shoes and had resorted to help from my husband to tie my shoes for me if they had laces. I refused to take photos because I was unhappy with the way I looked. There is a 10 year span of photos in my scrapbooks and photo albums and on Facebook where my family is pictured without me in the photos. I also refused to buy clothing. I wore black all the time because it made me appear slimmer. I needed to get started once again on the track to getting healthy.
I joined my local gym and started working out on the machines and taking Step classes. I also joined a boot camp and lost 30 lbs., but it was all so grueling and I gained it all back and more. I hated it, but I did it anyway because that’s what working out is like…right???
Well, I was so wrong. One Saturday I was doing my usual workout and heard the sound of Latin rhythms coming from the group fitness class room. The members were wearing belly dance scarves and shaking and dancing. I stood and watched for a while and was invited by the instructor to join the party. That was the day I discovered Zumba and a new path to physical fitness and wellness.
The next two years I attended various classes sometimes 2x a day. I lost 76 lbs. and was feeling much better. I started to see improvement in all areas of my life. It’s amazing how being healthier can change your outlook. Coupled with eating every 2 1/2 to 3 hours, which boosts the metabolism, and exercise my total weight loss over the last 3 years, has been 135 lbs. I feel GREAT!!!
I was encouraged by the gym owner and my husband to get my certification to teach in the water fitness program at the gym. I decided to take it a step further and become SCW, AAFA Group Fitness certified and then Zumba certified. Since then I have obtained certifications in Personal Training, CORE, R.I.P.P.E.D USA, Wellness Coaching and Nutrition, Aqua Zumba, AquaFit Cardio, and Pilates.
The light came on when I realized all fitness plans are designed to show results. You can do everything right, but, if you don’t love what you are doing, you will eventually give up when you get bored or don’t get the results you are looking for. You have to find a fitness plan that you will love to do for the rest of your life. Your body works for you everyday so do your part and make it easier for your body to do its job. I love to dance and group fitness was the gateway to bringing fitness back into my life.
